An arsonist started a fire on the night 3/4 October 2018 in one of the churches of the Monastery of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers at Ganina Yama outside Ekaterinburg.
The flames damaged the roof, the small dome and various church utensils on the second floor, as well as the iconostasis of the church.
Firemen arrived at 1:25 AM. “It took less than an hour to localize the fire on an area of 750 sq. ft.,” the press service for the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Sverdlovsk Province reported. They had completely finished putting out the fire and analyzing the building by 5:26. No casualties were reported.
Police from Sredneuralsk arrived at the scene to investigate and collect evidence, interview witnesses and establish the identity of the suspected arsonist, who turned out to be a 30-year-old native of Ekaterinburg, said Valery Gorelykh, a spokesman for the Sverdlovsk Regional Department of the Interior Ministry.
The police were very surprised when the suspect himself came to the 15th police station in Ekaterinburg that morning. But not to make a confession, but to declare the loss of his personal documents. The man was detained. He had previously been serving a sentence for theft.
During the interrogation, he admitted that he had not only set fire to the church, but had also cracked the donation box in order to steal money from it. The exact amount of damage to the church of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers at Ganina Yama has not yet been determined.
